Anne and Dennis Kirby weren’t alone on their 1990 honeymoon at the Big Bay Point Lighthouse Bed-and-Breakfast; one of the ghosts there made its presence known on their first night. Anne Kirby.

Dennis had a different kind of encounter during their stay. Inspired by the ghost stories he’d read and the somewhat spooky grounds, damp basement and creaky building, he sat down at the computer in the living room and began to peck away at a story about the spirits found within the lighthouse. Marilyn Gotschall was so impressed by what he’d written that she promptly forwarded the story to the Porcupine Press, an Upper Peninsula–based newspaper in Chatham. The next week, the paper published the story on the front page under the headline “Ghostly Activities at Big Bay Lighthouse”:

When William Pryor arrived many years ago, little did anyone know how long he would stay as the first keeper of the light. He received a small salary and a promise to stay on as long as he was able to work.

A few years after maintaining the light with one assistant, a tragic occurrence upset his peaceful lifestyle. His son had an accident which required his being taken by boat to Marquette, dying there, being transported back, and then being buried. This caused Pryor’s mind to crack. Shortly after the accident, Mr. Pryor went to an isolated area and hung himself from a tree. It’s not known where he or his son are buried, but it is possible they are buried on the grounds.

Shortly after the above incidents, strange happenings began to occur. Kerosene lamps would go out, or at times would even light on their own. The big light would at times change colors, ranging from red to green to pale blue. The large boiler in the fog house would hiss and blow its horn at the first hint of rain; even without the tender being present. Once it was said that a gurgling sound would fill the sitting room nearest the shoreline. Water would seep up through the cracks in the floor. A low, groaning sound would begin and a cold chill would pass through the room. An inspection of the trapdoor in the room revealed nothing out of the ordinary. An inspection of the light found nothing amiss. An inspection of the fog house would show no one had tampered with the boiler.

One thing which did cause a panic was the time one of the children was returning from the Big Bay School. Being just before dark, the light was faint, and a being appeared to be hanging from the top railing of the tower by his hands. Running to the house, the figure on the tower disappeared. Thinking someone had fallen, the lad walked quickly around the building, but finding no body, immediately told his father. A thorough inspection revealed nothing. At times, other children would see the body hanging by its hands from a railing, always just before dark. Never did an adult witness this occurrence. It
